The challenge
Everyday questions. Complex source material.
People search in everyday language; legal documents use formal terms and cross-references. A useful product needs to bridge that gap while keeping the source, context, and edition clear.
Constitution.ng brings search, structured reading, and source verification into one experience. The engineering challenge was to make relevant provisions easy to find while keeping every citation tied to stored evidence.
Four decisions that shaped it
Make the evidence easy to check.
Find meaning and exact references
Search combines semantic retrieval with lexical matching and exact section lookup. When a model provider is unavailable, the system discloses a lexical fallback so readers can still search the published corpus.
Build citations from the source
Citations and provision text come from canonical records and their document hierarchy. Readers can open original source pages, inspect related provisions, and check the wording themselves.
Make publication status explicit
Public search uses published releases. Source editions are labeled, while material under review stays private. The implemented reading experience supports multiple instruments as they become ready for publication.
Source edition clearly labeledGate AI explanations on evidence
Persistent conversations and evidence-backed explanation infrastructure are implemented. Generation remains gated on evaluation and capacity checks, keeping retrieval useful independently of an AI answer.
How it works
From a question to its source.
- 01 · SearchStart with a questionUse everyday wording or an exact section reference.
- 02 · RetrieveFind relevant provisionsMatch against the selected published source release.
- 03 · VerifyRead the originalCheck the citation, source edition, and original page.
- 04 · KeepReturn to the sourceSave provisions in your browser or copy a source link.
What’s implemented
- SearchExact references and semantic retrieval
- SourcesCanonical citations and original pages
- ControlPublished releases and gated AI generation
Implementation snapshot: October 2026. The published corpus contains the 1999 Constitution in its 2004 source edition, without later amendments. Additional Acts remain under review. AI generation is gated; translated legal answers and account-synced bookmarks remain planned.
